2022: A Look Back

As the year draws to a close, it is a natural and indeed common time to reflect upon the past 12 months. At first thought, my mind naturally went to the negative—the romantic disappointments, job stresses, and Gizmo’s ill-health, to name a few. As humans, negative experiences and feelings are distorted in our memories, given disproportionate saliency and crowding out the host of positive memories we may hold. So I thought it an important exercise to just go through the year on my phone, month by month, and pull out the multitude of positive memories from the photos and videos I’d captured throughout the year. And I was actually shocked to remember just how many happy moments were had, from the big ticket events like road tripping through the Dolomites or living in Atlantic Canada for a month to the smaller, everyday moments like taking Gizmo to the beach or sampling Toronto’s hot dogs. 2022, thanks for the memories. Here’s to moving forward with hope in 2023.
